In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how to enable SSL connections for the PostgreSQL database server. PostgreSQL provides support for SSL connections made to the database server, thus ensuring that all communications exchanged between the client and server are encrypted. As such, additional steps need to be taken to ensure data privacy and security.Įnabling SSL authentication for connections made to the server is one of the ways of ensuring data privacy. Out of the box, PostgreSQL does not provide sufficient safeguards to ensure data protection and privacy. Database security is usually one of the top-of-mind concerns for organizations.

Store the bag out of direct sunlight in a cool dry place for a week to ensure the seed heads dry out.Īfter a week, you can crush the seed heads to release the black seeds. To save seed, collect dried seed heads in Autumn or Winter, clipping them off and placing them into a brown paper bag. Each individual flower will produce several tiny black seeds. How to save seed from Pycnanthemum virginianumĪbout a month after blooming, the flowers will have formed seeds. The blooming period for Pycnanthemum virginianum begins in mid-Summer and lasts for approximately four weeks. The flowers do not bloom all at once, but only a few at a time, working their way from the outside edge to the center. The individual flowers are white in color and often have purple dots. There will be many flower heads that are roughly 3/4″ diameter (9 mm) and flat containing many small flowers (25-50). This is mainly because leaf-eating insects avoid the plant as well as deer/rabbits. The foliage of Virginia Mountain Mint is generally attractive during the entire growing season. The edges are smooth, and if you crush them they release a strong minty aroma. Opposite linear leaves that are ~2″ long (5 cm) by 1/4″ (6 mm) wide are green in color and will have no petiole or stem. Stalk / stem of Pycnanthemum virginianum Leaf The green or red stalk will be square in shape, or at least have four sharp angles, have small white hairs, and branch frequently, giving it a shrub or bush-like appearance. Pycnanthemum virginianum typically grows 2-3′ tall (60-90 cm). In Fall and Winter, the seed heads of Pycnanthemum virginianum will persist. You can always confirm it is a mountain mint by crushing some of the leaves. In Spring,Pycnanthemum virginianum emerges with green foliage that is often purple on the underside of the leaves. Identification and Characteristics Lifecycle of Pycnanthemum virginianum So, it will be attractive and interesting even when not in bloom. The leaves and branching of Virginia Mountain Mint make the overall plant seem like a small bush throughout the growing season. It’s like there is a whole world of specialist pollinating insects that get no attention! Beautiful foliage and shape What is also really cool is that you almost never see these pollinators on other flowers. I thought I was an observant gardener, but after 2 minutes looking at my mountain mint I realized there are a whole lot of species I wasn’t familiar with. If you thought you were familiar with the insects in your ‘neighborhood’, think again! Virginia Mountain Mint is going to bring in pollinating insects you’ve never seen before! I’m not kidding. Pycnanthemum virginianum (Virginia Mountain Mint) is good for attracting ridiculous amounts of pollinators to your garden, having a long bloom period, growing attractive foliage, and for the delicious minty aroma it’s foliage produces! Pollinator madness! Sources What are the Benefits of Pycnanthemum virginianum Numerous bees, beetles, butterflies, flies. Virginia Mountain Mint, Common Mountain Mint, Mountain Mint, Mountain Thyme, Prairie Hyssop, Pennyroyal The native range of Pycnanthemum virginianum (Virginia Mountain Mint) is the Midwestern and Eastern United States, Canada, and small pockets in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. This helps keep the leaves looking great throughout the growing season as deer, rabbits, and leaf-feeding insects avoid Pycnanthemum virginianum. The foliage gives off a minty aroma when crushed, just like other mountain mints. One of the best plants at attracting pollinators, numerous species of insect visit the flowers. Commonly known as Virginia Mountain Mint, it will grow 2-3′ tall in full sun and well draining soil and bloom numerous white flower heads for a month or more. ![]() Pycnanthemum virginianum is a herbaceous perennial native to Eastern North America.
![]() This is not to say the production design didn’t play its part. The main colors in the film – green, yellow and red – were inspired by the paintings of the Brazilian artist Juarez Machado. Most of the credit goes to extensive color grading, which unfortunately led to countless films and commercials being green or blue over the next decade. These colors were not completely achieved in production. ![]() You can watch it here:īlue is a color that appears like a breath of fresh air from time to time. As I’ve explained in my video on how films are shot in two colors – the primary colors of Amélie are red and green. The majorly green hue was risky but paid off. One of the major contributions of Amélie to cinema was in color grading. The exception to this happens with over the shoulder shots. The characters are framed mostly in the center. This discipline is one of the reasons it works. You’d think with a film of such visual flair the director could easily have framed this more traditionally, but he doesn’t. A great example is an early unassuming scene where Amélie speaks to her landlady. Up or down, sideways, dollying in or out – there’s hardly a shot where the camera doesn’t move. The camera technique is not often appreciated in Amelie, but shots like the one with Amélie on the bridge are one of the finest you’ll ever see in cinema. Like Leone, Jeunet films in the spherical format and crops rather than film anamorphic. One of the techniques Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses extensively is the character popping into frame, inspired directly by Sergio Leone. The camera angles and movements are fluid and vibrant. Let’s face it, it’s the world we all wish we could have, especially in the last two years. With Amélie he goes one eighty to a colorful and cheerful world where only good things can happen – even when events are bad. He did dark with Delicatessen and Alien: Resurrection. ![]() Jean-Pierre Jeunet can push the visuals both ways – dark or cheerful. You feel you are watching a comic book come alive. Just watch Alien: Resurrection.Īmélie was a response to the restrictions Jeunet had to endure in Hollywood. The actors are almost caricatures of the roles they are playing. It is clear visually he loves to create a rich tapestry and mise-en-scene that lets his actors shine in. This distorts the facial features in a way that lends to his type of comedy. He can frame characters in close up in the foreground while showing us the world they live in. Jean-Pierre Jeunet loves super wide angles – wider than most directors. Understanding the Cinematography of Bruno Delbonnel ![]() I am sure…there will be a legal challenge, and I can't tell you that we win it, given all of the different challenges to gun violence laws and restrictions on individual firearm access and control….I think it's time to talk about the absoluteness of the discussion and the current court actions that suggest that the Second Amendment is an absolute right." "There are gonna be a lot of questions about whether or not we think we have the legal rights to do that. The Associated Press reports that Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina "said he won't enforce it, and Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said he's uneasy about it because it raises too many questions about constitutional rights." In a statement issued on Friday, Allen said "the temporary ban challenges the foundation of our Constitution, which I swore an oath to uphold." Grisham said state police would be charged with enforcing the order, which prescribes a fine of up to $5,000 per violation. The New Mexico Shooting Sports Association, a chapter of the National Rifle Association, said it planned to join the two other groups in challenging Grisham's order. And the state "is unable to rebut this presumption, because the regulation is not consistent with Nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation." The order "clearly and unambiguously violate the Second Amendment's protection of the right to 'bear arms' that 'shall not be infringed,'" the second lawsuit says, and "deprive law-abiding gun owners of their only means of self-defense from criminal attack while in public." Under Bruen, the first lawsuit says, the carry ban is "presumptively unconstitutional" because "the plain text of the Second Amendment" covers public possession of guns for self-defense. Both groups argue that Grisham's order plainly fails the Bruen test. That decision overturned New York's sweeping limits on public possession of firearms and established a constitutional test for gun restrictions, which the Court said must be "consistent with this Nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation." Gun Owners of America, along with another Bernalillo County resident, filed a similar federal lawsuit against Grisham on Saturday. ![]() Supreme Court's 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. At a press conference on Friday, she conceded that the order was apt to be challenged in court as a violation of the Second Amendment but added, "I welcome the debate and the fight about making New Mexicans safer." ![]() The order covers "cities or counties averaging 1,000 or more violent crimes per 100,000 residents per year since 2021," a criterion currently met only by Bernalillo County. Grisham said "citizens with permits to carry firearms are free to possess their weapons on private property (such as at a gun range or gun store), provided they transport the firearm in a locked box, use a trigger lock, or some other mechanism that renders the gun incapable of being fired." The order, which lasts for 30 days but can be renewed, applies to concealed or open carry of firearms on public property, with exceptions for police officers and security guards. This is what Cadillac Records is meant to illustrate: a time when rock ’n’ roll moved mountains and not just automobiles. The cops are clearly of a different mind, though, and they swarm the rocker and his admirers, shoving them, kicking and screaming, offstage. “Ahhhhh, yeah! All right!” Berry’s doppelgänger cries out with glee while his dance partner wears a look that borders on sexual arousal. Their efforts prove futile, however, and before long a ponytailed blonde has climbed onto the stage and is shimmying back-to-back with Def and his Gibson. In addition to Mos Def, the picture stars Beyoncé Knowles, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, and Emmanuelle Chriqui. The second film, tentatively titled Chess, is directed by Jerry Zaks, best known for his Tony-winning work on Broadway ( House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation), and though the films cover overlapping territory, Cadillac Records can claim bigger star power. Written and directed by Darnell Martin ( I Like It Like That, Their Eyes Were Watching God) and produced by the film division of record label Sony BMG, Cadillac Records is actually one of two movies filmed this year that depict the rise of the Chicago blues and its musical spawn-rock ’n’ roll and soul-via the lives and loves of the black artists and white record men at one of the most innovative and influential independent labels in modern music history: Chicago-based Chess Records, home to not only Berry but also Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, Bo Diddley, Little Walter, and dozens more. The scene is one of the last to be shot for a film called Cadillac Records, slated to hit cineplexes in the coming months. But this imposed order soon turns to chaos when one particularly enthusiastic white teen near the front of the crowd knocks over part of the barrier (as per the script) and the crowd, whipped into a joyous frenzy by the music and its performer’s snake-hipped showmanship, surges together-blacks and whites mixing and then, scandalously, dancing together to the revolutionary strains of early rock ’n’ roll. Separated by skin color and a double row of velvet-rope-linked brass stanchions, they are meant to represent a concert audience, presumably somewhere in the South in mid-50s pre-civil-rights America. Regally turned out in a maroon-and-black brocade jacket, black button-down shirt, black pants, and a prosthetic pompadour that resembles the brilliantined prow of a cruise ship, Def swivels his narrow hips, bobs his glossy head, and duckwalks across the stage while mock-playing a blond, wide-body 1950 Gibson ES350 to the familiar start-and-stop cadence of Berry’s “No Particular Place to Go.”Īt the foot of the stage, approximately 250 extras dressed in 1950s fashions-bobby socks, saddle shoes, penny loafers, and sweaters-move politely to the music in two distinct groups. While Publisher itself will come to iPad later, owners of Affinity Designer and Photo on iPad will be able to open, edit and export Publisher documents, on the move, from today. The company also revealed it has updated the pioneering iPad versions of Affinity Designer and Photo to handle Affinity Publisher documents. The result is a massive streamlining of the creative workflow. While Affinity Publisher has its own impressive selection of built-in vector and photo editing tools, StudioLink means for the first time, graphics and images in a layout can be edited using a full array of professional tools, without the need to switch to a different app. In a world-first, Serif’s brand new StudioLink technology means owners of its vector design app Affinity Designer and image editor Affinity Photo can use them right there in an Affinity Publisher layout, simply by clicking the relevant product icon. Serif today launched Affinity Publisher and revealed a unique new way of working which the company says is set to revolutionize how creative professionals work. So, will it work for everyone, for all ther projects, today? No.īut it works for enough users that (from informal information I've heard) it provided a significant number of sales, and revenue, for Serif.Affinity Publisher has launched today on macOS and Windows And others will insist that their favorite feature is critical and the program shouldn't have been released without it. And even with those, some will insist that Footnotes/Endnotes are critical, and it shouldn't have been released without them. Many of us would rather have Publisher now, with its current set of functions, than wait another year or two for an initial version that would include support for ePub and for In Design files. Without all of these export options right from the start, plus opening of In Design files, Affinity Publisher will never take the professional design market away from Adobe and saying that they might do this in future isn’t good enough. So yeah, I would like to see everything in Publisher at some point. Yes, once you touch the ebook with Sigil, you basically lose the ability to do updates with ID or Publisher. So if I had to do that with Publisher, I could live with it, particularly if I was taking care of things not yet supported by Publisher, rather than fixing buggy output. ![]() I regularly edit ePubs using Sigil, fixing things ID did not get quite right. *not* buggy) and see solid ePub support roll-out in phases. Hopefully, we can expect better from Affinity/Serif (i.e. We should all remember the slow evolution of ePub support in ID, beginning with a very buggy implementation in CS5.5. i haven't seen any numbers on this, but with my own buying habits, I see the great majority of ebooks are simple text books, some with photo sections, but rarely with photos that have to be in a certain place in relation to the text (outside of the cover and some chapter "numbers" that are images). Fixed layout books are important to certain market segments (kids books, graphic novels, etc.) but IMO remain relatively limited overall. Independent publishers want to have one platform to output both print and ebooks. Having said that, it is also true that ebook sales as a percentage of overall sales are starting to flatten, so print is hardly going to go away. So, looking forward when this is eBook compatible.Ī little under 1/3 of Amazon book sales are ebooks, and it's becoming common for a print book to have a Kindle alternative. Until that happens, there's really not much to do with the software, since eBook is a far bigger industry for indie authors. InDesign is so expensive, and I was looking forward to a cheap alternative to allow me to create eBook files with low delivery costs on Amazon (those pesky delivery charges)! Hopefully, they'll fix this soon, and this will become a viable option for publishers to use! Also, when that time comes, hopefully they'll also allow images to be embedded as repeated images without increasing file size-again, delivery charges. I’ve said it before, this is a deal breaker. This is where Affinity are getting it wrong by not providing ePub export as a basic feature. Talk of alternative ePub creation software like Jutoh and Sigil is missing the point, yes you can use other programs to create ebooks but why would you want to start from scratch with clunky software when, using InDesign you create one beautiful layout and export for print or ePub.
